  1. Hi, Back in March I bought 5 chicks in the hopes of raising egg layers. I bought a variety of breeds to see which would “work out the best” for this Southern Utah environment. I bought a Rhode Island Red, a Buff Orpington, a Barred Rock, a Black Sex Link and a Red/Gold Sex Link. Well, as it turns out I ended up with a Rooster. However, I don’t know if it is the Barred Rock or the Black Sex link as they were pretty much identical upon purchase. Is there any way for me to tell which breed the rooster is? They still look very much alike as far as feathers and coloring goes. It’s just that one is clearly a Rooster! Please let me know… Thank you!

    • Probably the Barred Rock, they are vent sexed, about 98% accurate. How old are they? The Barred Rock should start showing barring, kind of like a zebra, the Black Sex Link will be black, with some red hackle (neck) feathers. As chicks, the Sex Link rooster will have a white patch on the head, everything else black. The Barred Rock will be all black with a white patch on the head and a white bib (male and females have these markings). Best of luck!
